this lily,
in concert with the sun,
doing its part
to shine bright
through the darkness of all
that is incomprehensible
in this world.

Giving plants dish water,
this lizard taking in the heat of stone.
Staring at me with its golden eye
wearing the most amazing intricately-patterned
skin, freshly shed,
Turquoise jewels emerge.

Mountain Lion in the Neighborhood

I came home last night after the light fell to see  a mountain lion wandering through a neighbor's front yard. A brief moment really but clearly saw his/her tail and lanky body and head with its rounded ears. I so much wanted to see more and wished s/he hadn't disappeared into the dark. Mountain lion is there to remind us of our place in their land.

I heard author Tai Moses talk about her new book Zooburbia on the radio the other day. She writes Insightful and mindful stories of how to live with the wild animals we meet in our urban lives.

The phone rings while preparing food,
Glancing up, it looks like an uneventful sunset.
but in a few short minutes
the sky is now graced with clouds as light as fine lace;
clouds blushed like peaches just blanched and peeled
Talking on the phone
held by my ear to shoulder,
a few clicks of the shutter, capturing the fleeting light,
infusing the close of the day
with the final warmth of the sun
greeting the world down under.

Wandering around the internet...and came across this website, Morning Earth, featuring various artists, past and present, working in different ways with and for the Earth... Ahmad Nadalian, artist from Iran, is particularly affected by the loss of rivers and streams in his childhood homeplace. He works in a variety of intriguing ways. View his work at the link above.

In his own words he says:  "Polluted environments are the result of polluted emotions, thoughts and attitudes; a pure world belongs to a pure being.  The pollution of nature comes from the pollution of the human soul.  We may be wrong in thinking we can work to save the environment; we have to realize that we too are part of the environment. All we need to learn is to stop polluting it any further.  This awareness will help us humans more than anything else."

When we allow wildness, our own spirit, to flourish within, we can also respect and allow nature’s spirit, the wild outside, to exist.
