Dawn Reis Ecologist
Hastings Reserve, Carmel Valley
========================================================================================
This program is based on a similar one initiated in the San Francisquito Watershed in the 1990’s. The purpose of these outings is to encourage increased awareness and appreciation for the river and watershed through both the arts and sciences.
Stories of the natural aspects of the watershed will be shared: how the plants and animals and natural systems of the river, land, and geology interact to create and support a whole ecosystem/bioregion. These outings will include reflective opportunities such as creating a simple drawing of what one is seeing, writing a poem about the experience of being next to the river or what it may be like to be an animal of the bioregion. It will be an opportunity to share readings, walks, and encounters to gain a closer connection to the watershed that sustains all our lives.
Every other month a specific aspect will be offered on the second Saturday, building towards a whole experience of the watershed.
The outings are open to adults and children accompanied by adults.
For all outings:
Wear hiking shoes and layered clothing, sun hat, sun screen, walking stick as desired...bring journal and any painting and other drawing supplies.
Food and water!
Los Padres Dam site requires a 20 minute walk to the dam with some uphill/downhill on gravely road.

"Destruction/Creation in Carmel Valley"
Talk on documenting the San Clemente Dam Removal Project through plein air paintings. - with Paola Berthoin
The $83 million project to demolish the 94-year-old San Clemente Dam and the 133-year-old Chinese Dam, and restore that stretch of the Carmel River is now largely completed. Carmel Valley artist Paola Berthoin devoted herself to embracing and documenting the deconstruction of the dams in a series of on-site plein air paintings, sketches, photos, and audio, as she puts it, “finding something beautiful in destruction.” Paola will share her work and her direct interactions with those who worked on the project, the many living creatures, and the whole environment affected by removing the dams, moving a mountain, and freeing the flow of the river. This is a profound story of transformation and taking responsibility for what we humans create and destroy.

TRUTH & BEAUTY of the
FORT ORD OAK HABITATS
Photographs and paintings of the land slated for Monterey Downs development
Opening October 24, 2015 5-8 pm. at the Press Club in Seaside, CA
Runs from October 24 through November 24, 2015
Here is an article in this week's Monterey County Weekly. The purpose of this show is to show the Truth and Beauty of the area and to do everything possible with as many people as possible to speak out about the folly that this project is! Here is a link to the Keep Fort Ord Wild website where you can learn much more. Some of the information has changed but what has not changed is the very real threat to this land from the massive and ill-conceived proposed Monterey Downs Development.
If you want to go on a hike out there, I'd be happy to take you! Being out on the land and experiencing it first hand is eye opening!
Painting © Paola Berthoin
This painting is based on a photograph taken by Kathy Bell Frandeen (Kathybellphoto.com) of one bobcat among several that frequent the lands slated for this development.
Here is a wonderful and informative article written by Patrice Vecchione about these lands and why they need to be preserved in their natural state.

Sea Changes ACT is a project to promote understanding and conservation relating to
plastic pollution, sustainable fishing, and climate change. Here is a summary video on the project.
Plastic pollution, climate change and sustainable fishing begin on land with the choices we make in our hearts and minds, and in our homes and watersheds, wherever we live...Passion for Place is that message..when we perceive ourselves as part of the watershed, we can take care of the whole. The whole earth and water planet is a watershed!

FOCUS on Sustainability
Theme: "Sense of Place"
Laura Lee Lienk, an author in Passion for Place, is one of the speakers.
Paola will be presenting Passion for Place at a breakout group of the
FOCUS event at CSUMB.
From an ecological point of view, what does it mean to have a sense of place? How can cultivating a sense of place help shift how we interact with where we live and make decisions for the future of that place and for the people, animals, and plants that live there?
From the CSUMB website:
President Ochoa in his welcoming speech at the recent Future of Fort Ord Colloquium:
"One part of demonstrating our commitment to sustainability here at CSUMB is our seventh annual, free, all-day look at locally relevant sustainability issues and solutions in a coordinated effort between the community and university. We call it “Focus On Community & University Sustainability” and on Feb. 12, here in this building, we will be addressing “A Sense of Place.” This event will emphasize the importance of thinking about the specifics of our PLACE (here in Monterey County) when making decisions about sustainability. You are all invited to attend."
As defined by Wikipedia: "The term sense of place has been defined and used in many different ways by many different people. To some, it is a characteristic that some geographic places have and some do not, while to others it is a feeling or perception held by people (not by the place itself). It is often used in relation to those characteristics that make a place special or unique, as well as to those that foster a sense of authentic human attachment and belonging."

The books have arrived!
They are ready for sale in time for the holiday season. You can let me know what you would like by filling out the contact form on this website. Thank you.
August 13, 2012
All 200 pages of the book are now printed! Once the cover is printed this week, all will be shipped to AZ to be bound, then shipped back for final finishing and delivery. Book release gatherings will be scheduled once the books are in hand...
July 24, 2012
Passion for Place will be going to press July 26! Once all is printed, all will be shipped to Arizona to be bound. When it comes back, the CD will be inserted into the holder in the back of the book, the books wrapped in paper, then brought to Carmel Valley! This all should be completed by mid-September.
This has been quite a process. I decided to do the book three years ago, July 19, 2009. And now, the time draws near for the book to be released! If you wish to pre-order the book, please go to the contact page where you can email me with your information. Thank you.
Below are images from the first and second days' printing. What is amazing is to see how much paper it takes to create 1000 books! (book is 200 pages) Click on the first image and it will take you to a much larger image with caption. Click the arrow in the right corner of that larger image box to see each image...
Days three through six... Marathon sessions of press checks requires great concentration to make sure the color balance is as close to the proof as possible. Once the current sheet is signed off, the press starts running and 1000 sheets have run through the press in about half an hour!
